Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D)

This benefit pays a set amount (a principal sum) if you die or lose a body part due to an accident. Some plans include loss of sight, speech, and hearing, and the payment may be a percentage of the principal sum. Review your plan document to see what is covered for the plan you are considering. Death benefits are paid to a beneficiary that you choose.

Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) beneficiary

This is the person who will receive the principal sum if you die due to an accident.

Age of Traveler

Put the age of the traveler as of the coverage start date. For most plans, the coverage start date is the day you choose for coverage to begin. For trip protection, the coverage start date is normally one day after the date you purchase your plan.

Cancel for Any Reason

This is an optional benefit offered on some trip protection plans. The benefit varies by plan and pays a certain percentage of your trip cost if you cancel your trip for any reason not otherwise covered by the plan. In order to purchase this benefit, there is normally a requirement that you buy the plan within a specified number of days from the date you make your initial trip deposit. Be certain to check for this requirement if you want to buy this benefit.

Cancel for Work Reasons

This is an optional benefit offered on some trip protection plans. It adds additional work-related covered reasons for trip cancellation that would normally not be included.

Coinsurance

You are required to pay this amount after you first pay your deductible, if you have a deductible. Here's an example:  Your coinsurance is stated as  80% of the next $5,000 of expenses, then 100% to the medical maximum. This means that after you pay your deductible, the insurance company will pay 80% of your eligible expenses up to $5,000 (80% of $5,000 is $4,000), and you will pay $1,000. Then, the insurance company will pay 100% of the remaining expenses to your medical maximum.

Collision Damage Waiver

This is an optional benefit. It provides rental car coverage if you rent a car while you are on your trip.

Coverage Area

Travel Including the United States — If the United States is not your home country and any part of your trip includes a visit to any of the 50 United States or Washington, D.C., you must choose "Travel Including the United States" for your coverage area.

Travel Excluding the United States — If the United States is your home country, and your travel plans include a stop in the United States before departing the United States, your coverage will begin after you depart the United States. You should select "Travel Excluding the United States" for your coverage area.

If you are traveling, and the United States is not one of your destinations but you have a layover or transfer in the United States, you need to choose "Including the United States."
